Lines Served

This is a through station on the GNER line from King's Cross to Edinburgh and on the Trans-Pennine line from Scarborough, via Leeds to Preston and beyond. Destinations to Harrogate, Hull and other local services are also served by this station.

Layout

There are three groups of platforms, aligned approximately north/south:

Platforms 1 to 4

You enter the foyer, moving west from the station forecourt. To your left is the Travel Centre, whilst to your right are several refreshments vendors. Continuing west, you enter the main concourse, which lies east of platform 3, being separated from this by a series of buildings with gaps between them.

Platform 1, shares the east half of the island platform extending south from the area beside the concourse.

Platform 3, extends beyond the northern limit of the concourse, before being designated as platform 4. Platform 2, occupies the east half of the island platform which extends north of the concourse.

It is apparent that some bay platforms have been decommissioned, leaving areas for special services along the east wall of the station, to the north and south of the concourse. See the description of platforms 1 to 4 for more details.

Platforms 5 to 9

This island of platforms is bounded to the east by platform 5 and to the west by platform 9. The area around the foot of the steps from the bridge and the head of the steps from the subway is known as the Platform 5 Concourse.

Bay platforms extend south from the Platform 5 Concourse, such that platform 6 occupies the west half of the island platform with platform 5; whilst platform 7 occupies the east half of the island platform with platform 9.

A bay platform extends north from the Platform 5 Concourse, with platform 8 occupying the east half of the island platform with platform 9. There is, however, no equivalent platform to the west of platform 5.

Platforms 10 and 11

This is an island platform with platform 10 lying east of platform 11. The steps from the bridge and subway are located towards the north end of this island platform which does not extend as far north as other platforms within this station.

Other features

The bridge, with two sets of steps from platform 3, beside the concourse, leads west to join platforms 5 to 9, 10 and 11, then continues to the west exit towards the National Railway Museum.

The subway, with steps leading from a point on platform 3 just south of the concourse, continues west to join platforms 5 to 9 and 10 and 11.

Lifts connect the subway to each group of platforms. These are the only lifts within this station that are accessible to the public, the goods lifts are only operated by station staff.

Accessibility

There is step-free access via the main entrance onto platforms 1 to 4 and lift access from here, via the subway, to the other platforms. We therefore believe this station is accessible to wheelchair users.

There is, however, stairs-only access via the bridge to/from the exit towards the National Railway Museum.
