General Information

Eastbound trains other than First Great Western use the east section of platforms 3 to 7, whilst westbound trains use the west section.

The First Great Western trains have nine coaches and occupy the whole platform, normally eastbound platform 2, westbound platform 3.

The area at the west end of platform 1 is reserved for preparing trains which are subsequently moved towards the east end for boarding. We presume that this platform is normally used for trains starting from this station.

Platform 0 is mainly used for major events and Central Trains services towards Gloucester etc.

You can reach platforms 1 to 7 via steps, from the main corridor, or lift from the east corridor. Each corridor runs between the concourse (north) or car park (south). The entrance from the car park to the east corridor is normally closed, but can be opened by staff at the barrier at the entrance to the main corridor on request.

You can reach platform 0 via steps from the concourse, or step-free from the car park to the west of the station.

The east entrance from the car park to Platforms 6 and 7 may be opened during special events, at the Millennium Stadium.

To Where?

  To Platform 0
To Platforms 1 to 7 Via Steps from the Main Corridor
To Platforms 1 to 7 Via Lifts from the East Corridor
To Platforms 6 and 7 Via Steps from the East Entrance from the Car Park

To Platform 0

The corridor towards platform 0 leads from the west side of the concourse, your right as you enter via the main entrance, in front of you from the taxi rank or to your left if you came via the main corridor.

Having entered this corridor, turn right, go up a flight of steps then turn left (180 degrees) and continue to the fence in front of you. Turn right and continue, up a slope onto the platform.

Note that the step-free entrance from the car park would be to your right, just before the foot of the slope.

To Platforms 1 to 7 Via Steps from the Main Corridor

You can enter the main corridor either from the concourse, between the ticket office and WH Smith, or from the car park. From the car park, you enter the corridor facing west then turn right as you reach the ticket barrier.

We understand that the right-hand side of the corridor is preferred in support of the anti-clockwise traffic flow through the station. The steps to platforms 1 - 2 and 3 - 4 are divided into two sections by a central rail, use the right-hand side, whilst those for platforms 6 - 7 are a single set.

On leaving the concourse continue along the corridor, passing on your right, the steps up to platforms 1 - 2, then 3 - 4 and finally 6 - 7. In each case you go up two flights of steps onto the middle of the island platform, the higher number platform is to your left. Please read the paragraphs at the top of this page for more details about the likely location of trains on each platform.

As you move away from the car park entrance you pass on your right; steps up to platforms 6 - 7, 3 - 4 then 1 - 2. You go up two flights of steps onto the middle of the island platform, the higher numbered platform is to your right.

To Platforms 1 to 7 Via Lifts from the East Corridor

You can enter the east corridor either from the concourse or the car park. Note that the car park entrance is normally closed but can be opened by staff on request at the entrance to the main corridor.

In support of the anti-clockwise traffic flow through the station, we suggest you use the right-hand side of the corridor.

All lifts are the same on this station.

As you move away from the concourse, you pass the west lifts to platform 1 - 2, then 3 - 4 and 6 - 7. Note that the call button for this last lift is further to your right than that for the others.

As you go away from the car park, you pass the lift to platforms 6 - 7 (on your left), then the east lift to platforms 3 - 4 then 1 - 2 on your right.

On reaching platform level, you're in the middle of the island platform with platform 7 to your right (of 6 - 7) otherwise the higher number platform is to your left.

Please read the paragraphs at the top of this page for more details on the likely location of trains.
